Herbert KELLER 1884-1949
« on: Sunday 24 October 21 03:53 BST (UK) »
Hello, with your help I have found out what happened to most of my ancestors who ended up in the US. I'm trying to track down the last one (I think) - Herbert KELLER. He is mentioned on the death notice of his nephew Leonard KELLER (d 6 Jan 1944) and I'm pretty sure this is Herbert's death in Alameda on 20 Sep 1949, mmn BRUNER, born other country (would be Australia). This says his birth date is 2 Feb 1884 (or 1886 on Social Security application), though I have been unable to locate his birth. Children in this family tend to be registered under one name and use a different one. His parents should be Otto KELLER (c1855-1927) and Lena (Magdalena) BRUNNER (1851-1929). The family travelled to San Francisco at various times around 1906-1910.

Any information about Herbert in the US would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.  :)

Cemetery records -confirms birth as Australia and cause of death due to a house file. AKA William Wilson O'Neil.

Struggling to find any trace of him otherwise. Perhaps he had a few additional names we don't know!

2ND HAYWARD FIRE DEATH IDENTIFIED
HAYWARD,  Sept 22. Coroner's deputies said today the second victim of the Hayward fire early Tuesday has been tentatively identified as William Wilson O'Neil, 63. Oneil was a resident of the rooming house at 1023 B Street, which was burned to the ground in the $40,000 fire, and has been missing since. All others have been accounted for, according to Chief of Police George Forth.
The second body was found in the charred ruins of the buildings by clean-up crews yesterday. A wallet identified the victim as Frederick Newburg, 79, also a tenant in the rooming house. The first body found the day of the fire is believed to be that of O'Neil.

Thank you very much jorose and RJ137! I think I'm struggling with the new familysearch format, or may be just not adapting to change very well. Gives me another name to search, though as you say, he may well have gone by a number of aliases.  ;)

Thanks also for the details from the newspaper article, how sad.

Have found another Social Security Application from Jun 1937 for William Herbert ONEIL, mother Lena BRUENER and father Timothy ONEIL, birth - 2 Feb 1886. Definitely the right mother, I wonder if the father is just a fabrication or is this who Herbert really believed his father was?

At least I know he was in the US in 1937.

Modified:
And a WW2 Draft registration for William Henry ONEIL with birth date 2 Feb 1886. (Says born San Francisco, and the "person who will always know your address" is "friends" at the same residential address.) Works for the Carnation Milk Company.

And another Social Security entry -  Patrick Henry ONEIL, born 2 Feb 1886 with mother Lena BRUNER and father Pat ONEIL. Curiouser and curiouser.

:-\  A possible in the 1910 in San Francisco with wife Arlie (nee COATS) and son Wesley born 14 June 1909. Herbert is the right age and born Australia, though his parents birthplaces don't tally with what I know of them.

Arlie COATS married Herbert ONEIL 1 Nov 1908. I believe there may be a newspaper announcement. Is it please possible for someone to look at it and see if there is any further information that may be useful?

Arlie and Wesley are with her father in 1920

Arlie remarries in 1926 and says she is widowed.  :-\

ARLENE O'NEIL GRANTED
 INTERLOCUTORY DECREE
Arlene O'Neil was granted an interlocutory decree of divorce from Herbert O'Neil by Superior Judge E. P. McDaniel this morning on the grounds of desertion and wilful neglect. Mrs. O'Neil testified that while she and her husband lived together, he was drunk most of the time and severely beat her upon numerous occasions. Mrs. Rolla Thompson, mother of Mrs. O'Neil, corroborated her daughter's testimony. She told of an instance when her daughter came to visit her while she was residing in Santa Cruz. She testified, at that time, her daughter's face was black and blue from a severe beating given her by her husband that she hardly knew her. Mrs. O'Neil stated she was married in Oakland November 1, 1908 and separated in October 1922. They have one child, Wesley O'Neil, 15 years of age. O'Neil was residing at Merrimac, Butte county, according to Mrs. O'Neil when she last heard of him. Mrs. O'Neil is employed as chambermaid in the Western Hotel here.

Thank you very much RJ137, another very sad story.

Now to work out whether the husband of Arlie COATS is "my" Herbert. I can see on Ancestry their marriage is in the "Index to Marriage Licenses and Certificates", but there doesn't appear to be an actual copy of the certificate. Does anyone know where I might be able to find more details about the marriage?
