What infringement is this?
« on: Sunday 24 October 21 23:30 BST (UK) »
A Scottish ancestor served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War 1. His service record cites the following infringement: Forfeits 9d for losing by neglect 1 housewife Place: Field Date: 22/5/18 Remarks taken from Army Form B213, Army Form A. 36, or other official documents: B2069 DO 54/18.

What does ‘losing by neglect 1 housewife’ denote in this military context? I’m perplexed.

Cheers,

Rodeo

In the RAF we were issued with 'housewives' in 1952!

A 'housewife' was a small cloth wrapper containing needles, thread, a thimble etc.

Harry.
Ballingall, Donaldson, Fulton, Gillespie, Ramsay, Walker - in Fife.
Bury - in Salford & Liverpool.
Jack - in Glasgow, Dunfermline & Dundee.
Bermingham/Birmingham - in Cork.
Eagle - in Norfolk, Edinburgh & Glasgow.

Aha! So, it was an item rather than a person that he lost by neglect. Thanks so much for the clarification, Harry. It's much appreciated.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Yeah, and there I was imagining all sorts of sinister scenarios in which my feckless ancestor might have 'lost' a housewife -- notably a female person -- in the field in France.  :o ;D

My brother did his National Service in the early 1950’s.  He still has his ‘housewife’. He says he was jolly glad that mum had shown both sons how to sew on a button and darn a sock  ;D
