Hello Anthony,

Do you have Ellen's surname? You say "by 1856 children born .. " James would have been 16 in 1856 .. would he not have been born sometime prior to the 1840s if that is the case? I'm not certain how many people in their late teens were parents in the 1850s onwards but I would think very few. You have no idea of the history in Roscommon .. what about the history in England which may assist in finding his Roscommon ancestors? The children of Ellen and James may be named after their grandparents. Things rarely turn up .. you need to do a bit of detective work.

Chris

Do you have the childrens names of James/Ellen, perhaps they
followed the naming pattern.......1st born male named after
the fathers father, 1st female after the mothers mother etc.

The naming pattern is on the www via google for correct pattern.

Roscommon and Sligo are the best covered of all Ireland counties
transcribed by the Mormon (Family History Centre).

Their BIVIR shows quite a few James Owens inc an 1840 birth.

Sorry it should say in England by 1866. was Owens a popular name to have in Ireland in these times? i am assuming it is more likely to be Welsh?

What is the mormon BIVIR? please

many thanks

Anthony.

The BIVRI is the British Isles Vital Records Index, almost the same that
the Mormon (Latter Day Saints) have on line, but some in the CDroms
are not included on their web search and vice versa.

Here are the references that closely match your James, but I cannot be
certain taht either are your James [see below].

The Griffiths Valuation Index does have a number of Owens in Roscommon
including names such as Francis, James, John, etc. but determining which
are the family of James is not easy!.

The following is from the Valuation Index.

It is worth keeping in mind that if James mother was from an adjoing
parish and not the parish of his father, then it is quite likely that any
records of marriage/birth/baptism may be in that parish.

Hiya Anthony,

I've not come across Carlos as a surname before. I looked at Irish Ancestors Surnames which is based on Griffiths Valuation of Ireland (1848-64). This site showed me the name appeared twice in Galway and 26 times in Roscommon.  Your task might be somewhat easier if you looked at the Carlos surname in Griffith's Valuation which took place in Roscommon, 1857-58. Make a note of the parishes then check to see if the surname Owens appeared in one of those parishes.

Out of curiosity, can I ask where can I get information from BIVIR?  Am I able to buy it in disc form?  I am looking for family in Mayo and this is the first time I have ever heard of BIVIR.
Thanks, Dee
