Mmmm....
Very interesting JM,

It suggests there were no close relatives to call on for the role.

Hi
I have had a good look around and have had no definite sightings of one John CRAIG in or around Emberton.
A couple of vague references in Redesdale -

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/240901487

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/240806822

There is however some evidence of at least one Johanna DOHERTY, both in the BMD records available online and this news item at Taradale.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/240907588

There are three marriages for women of that name.
To Francis HAWKINS 1872.
To Timothy McCARTHY 1873
to Patrick SLATTERY in 1874

One of these Johanna DOHERTYs is likely the mother of John DOHERTY whose birth to a single mother I have listed above.

There is not a Mary CRAIG or Mary DOHERTY on the Victorian  birth index.

The Kyneton Historical Society will have rates books and other local resources and may be able to locate on John CRAIG in the district.

http://home.vicnet.net.au/~kyhist/

It would be worth your while contacting them.

I do suspect your Mary was an out of marriage birth and Mary's marriage certificate  statements were less than true ;)

As she is from your direct line  persisting with your searches is important.

I do note there is not much of a nod to her mother in the naming of Mary RYAN's children unless the Ann at the end is it!

I wonder about the John DEWAR who arrived in Adelaide circa 1852 from Scotland.   Do you have access to the 1888 book by A. Sutherland?  - Victoria and its Metropolis Past and Present.   There is a CD-Rom and there's some detail at the BDA biographical website.   I assume those would all be based on submitted info offered to the book's editor back in the 1880s.   I wonder if that J Dewar was the witness to Mary Ellen's marriage?  - but that is simply speculation by me.

Anyways,  here's some brief notes on the submitted info gleaned by me re that John Dewar chap:
John DEWAR retire in the Bellarine district, in 1872, and has let much of his farmland out to other farmers.  He had been a sailor, originally from Scotland and arrived in Adelaide 1852 and then went to Victoria (gold fever) to Ballarat. He is a married man.

That is 10 of your 12 children. I do not see Thomas or Eugene.

What certificates do you have for BDM events in the lives of the people you have named?

For the children with births registered in Kyneton, you might hope that they are also baptised in the same church, Kyneton, where parents married.

Contact this society and ask if they have records for St Marys Roman Catholic Church, Kyneton, for baptisms 1890 to 1915
https://www.historyvictoria.org.au/directory/listing/kyneton-historical-society-inc

Using Trove....Catholic Church re-opened at Redesdale at 1892...

Catholic baptism records are useful because they name godparents. The godparents are very often close family members.

Mary CRAIG would seem to have contact with state child welfare system, so likely that mother and/or father not available.....dead, ill etc.

There might be CRAIG siblings around.

Could this be your Johanna Doherty/John Craig in the Kyneton Observer dated 4 Feb 1871?:
Johanna Doherty summoned John Craig for neglecting to support his illegitimate child …”

Hi
Well, Tree Spirit, I do think dennisryan will be very happy to read your terrific findings.
It is a clear lead on the relationship between Johanna DOHERTY and the CRAIG family and the Land Selection Registers place John CRAIG in the right place at the right time.

Careful reading of the news item reveals the child's birth to be 1869 which fits the known facts of Mary's age at death etc.

So at the time of the hearing it looks as if Johanna and baby Mary are together in the house of Johanna DOHERTY's stepfather after an unsuccessful attempt to have Mary fostered by John CRAIG's mother.

Within the same volume (Land Selection Registers, ) as linked by Tree Spirit there is land leased then purchased by others surnamed DOHERTY and there is a selection to one Johanna DOHERTY in the Metcalfe or Emberton parish. 1867  (image no. 32)
