Shipping
« on: Friday 05 November 21 13:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I'm attempting to track down 19th century logs for a merchant ship built in Britain 1869. Can't find it in the National Archives, though I know it exists as someone sent me one page of it (they don't remember where it came from...)

I'd appreciate any other sources that I could try - shipping history forums perhaps..?

Thanks

[PS. Is there a shipping / research sources topic already? couldn't find one]

Is your research related to the actual merchant vessel, or a specific crew member?

CLIP is a great resource for British merchant shipping data.  https://www.crewlist.org.uk/
Try this link for additional resources: https://www.genguide.co.uk/source/merchant-navy-ships-logs/

Depending on the area of your research, the FAQ page on the CLIP site is particularly helpful.

Logbooks and crew agreements of British and Empire ships from 1860 are stored in three main places
Maritime History Archive have 70% from 1863
https://mha.mun.ca/mha/holdings/searchcombinedcrews.php
TNA Kew has 10% including all for 1914-1918 and 1939-1950
National Martime Museum Greenwich 10% 1861 and 1862 and for years ending in "5"
The rest in local record offices.
Logbooks and Crew Agreements are usually searched using the vessels Official Number
You will find this site useful.
