Oh well! when I checked it out there was no sign of an offer for a 2 week free trial so I took the plunge and got a 1 month subscription!

Here's what was contained in the record:

William was born about 1781 in the parish of Devenish in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland.

He enlisted in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons at the age of 19 years on January 28, 1800 in Enniskillen, county Fermanagh for unlimited service. The General, the Earl of Pembroke was the Colonel. William served for a total of 23 years and 210 days and part of the time was taking part in the Battle of Waterloo.

His general conduct as a soldier was described as being remarkably good. He was described as being 5 foot 7 inches, brown hair, gray eyes, fair complexion and his trade or occupation was tailor.

=== 6th Inniskilling Dragoons ===
* as a Private = 11 years, 122 days
* as a Colonel = 10 years, 88 days
* add for Waterloo = 2 years

Colonel William Tuchburn / Touchburne was discharged on August 25, 1821 in Dublin, Ireland and he made his mark X for signature.

He didn't marry until after he was discharged so wasn't a young man.

Well, only very little of that tallies with the information sent to you by the old relative.
I cannot see any marriage record for William and Mary Duffy.
As he was a colonel when he left the army, his marriage may have been announced in the newspapers. I would look there next.

FindMyPast marriages in RC churches in Ireland don't go back that far and I only got the Plus subscription so it doesn't include newspapers but I'll figure a way out to access them somewhere.

Actually, I thought the bits that I was given from him via the granddaughter of Wm T and Mary Hamilton were helpful -- she was off a bit on the year - it was 1781 rather than 1775 in the parish of Devenish in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh and he was in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons.

I'm going to now try to find the military records for William Touchburn / Tichborne Jr and Mary Hamilton's son William Tichborne who was said to have joined the 51st East India regiment on 3.10.1884 - info from the same granddaughter.

I only wished I had lived back then and I would have asked so many questions that she would have been tired of hearing my voice  ;)

The William Tichborne who was given the medal for service in India turns out to have been a William Toach alias Tichborne born about 1860 in Leicestershire so he was not "my" William but according to the record above, it looks like he was a deserter...  ???
