WW2 Service records are still with the MoD.  There is a fee of £30

Although the cwgc entry shows his parents were of Peterhead that was 21yrs after he was born so are you sure he was born in Peterhead?

Where & when did his parents marry?

Casualty records show that he was serving with 2nd RHA when he died. There is a casualty card which records that he was born in Peterhead.

3 July 1942 was the time of the first battle - the defence - of El Alamein

I did wonder if he was illegitimate given there was no birth under MacGregor.  1926 marriage in Peterhead between John MacGregor & Helen Watt Smith
