Nothing like making a job challenging. My maternal family confused me by deciding on a change of surname. By paternal grandmother eemed to hop between her mother's maiden and married name. I'm only following a family tradition 🙂

I think you might have found the answer with those marriage entries in 1932 to bride Eileen Rogers 

Alexander and Mary had this son:

    THIEL, AUGUSTE        OATES     
GRO Reference: 1901  D Quarter in GATESHEAD  Volume 10A  Page 1005

He shows in 1911 as August Charles. Like we have been joking earlier, maybe he just didn't like this name! So, apart from the family surname change from Thiel to Shiel, maybe son August also decided to be known by his father's name of Alexander?

Interesting. As far as I know the family never formally changed there surname from Thiel to Shiel although I know they started calling themselves Shiel sometime before WW1. I've got August marrying Mary Ann Campbell in 1925, having a son, Alexander, a year later and her dying in 1927. He then married Eileen Rogers in 1932. Perhaps he got caught out using Shield, but the rest of the family used it on official documents.

This would answer my problem but starts another query. Why marry the same woman twice?
