Howarth Cottage nr Ecclefechan
« on: Thursday 11 November 21 11:42 GMT (UK) »
Looking at a map recently, I noticed a 'Howarth Cottage' close to the B 722. Today it appears to be the address of a Boarding Kennels.

I'm curious as to the origin of the name...'Howarth Cottage'....as the name Howarth tends to originate in Lancashire.

Just wondering if anyone with some local knowledge can throw some light on it.

Regards, Eric.

There are a number of records in Scotland for the name Howarth. Several church baptisms and marriages but none in Dumfriesshire pre statutory registration in 1855. There are 7 births in the County 1859 - 1888 and others later to the present day.

It doesn't surprise me that there are Howarths to be found in records in Scotland. I just didn't think it would be that common and as I said, it just raised my curiosity.

Maybe the name of the cottage has nothing to do with the surname Howarth.

Howarth, or Howath, seems to be a local place name

Reference in this local geology paper (page 24) to the Howarth bore-holes: https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/293070913.pdf

The Scotsman of 9 March 1937 (page 18) has a foxhunt report in which the fox's route takes it by Howarth and Blackwoodridge

Thanks Shaun. Maybe there's more to it than simply being named after someone. have to do a bit of reading.

I wonder if it started as Howath and gained the R over time?

Thanks, Eric.
