occupation on a 1789 baptism (completed very quickly with thanks!)

Baptism entries for Christ Church Spitalfields in 1789 (very kindly for future genealogists) generally show father's occupations. However I can't read what William SUTTON of White Row's occupation is. Can anyone suggest what it might be?

I think it could be 'Smith'

 - but what sort of smith . . . . cooper, black, silver, gold,  etc??

Thanks Wiggy, yes that's what my guess was too, though just wasn't sure. Certainly it would be nice if it was more specific.

Can you tell what sort of occupation was going on in White Row  (or that area) at that time Maddy??  Maybe that would give you a clue as to what sort of Smith.

That's a good idea. I did have a look in the papers yesterday to see if by any chance there were any mention of SUTTON and White Row, and just White Row Spitalfields in general, but nothing jumped out - will go back and have another look.  Might also look at the baptisms and see if there are any other entries for White Row around this time.

Had another look at the baptism register, a mixed bag of occupations for families on White Row - baker, dyer, porter, tripe merchant. Couldn't really see any other "smiths" (with just a quick look). Oh well, "smith" it will remain unless something else turns up.
