Dennis Lockwood .. help required please
« on: Saturday 13 November 21 19:00 GMT (UK) »
My 10 year old daughter and I have visited the graveside of my 2x great uncle to lay our poppies.
I explained to her that I never knew him, but felt the compulsion to make a special trip to find him.
She gas so many questions.. alot I have answers for her but many I just don't.

This is why I am posting for help. I have is army service record, I can read a little but some however I can't read or translate.
Dennis Lockwood, started his military service on the 15Th of August 1901, enlisting in Sheffield for the 17Th Lancers. I know he served in the Boar War. But I don't know where or how....
I know he ended his career with the machine Gun Corps ( cavalry). And this poor man ended his days broken in Menston Asylum,  Leeds . Dying on the 25Th of September 1920 his death certificate states paralysis of the insane ( she'll shock???). Can anyone help me understand his records . .

His WW1 service record seems to say he served in SA 1899-1907

Mobilised 5.8.1914 - 26.8.1914
then France 27.8.1914 - 29.6.1915
Home 30.6.1915 - 22.5.1919

There is another entry from 15.8.1908 - 5.8.1914 but I can’t decipher the place

I've found a separate and very sad pension record on Ancestry that describes his condition in May 1919 when assessed at ST Albans.

Afraid to say paralysis of the insane is often used for the final stages of syphylis, and this record does record that disease as an aggrevating factor

I think it's "reserve"  - there's a transfer record into the reserve dated 14 August 1908 in his records

Looks like he received the Queen's South Africa Medal. He was gassed in May 1915.

Have you seen this link before? https://secure.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/RollOfHonour/People/Details/22269

The East Parade section of Leeds City Centre is mainly businesses.
I do wonder if the Lockwood address of "13 East Parade" was actually their solicitor Norman Elliott, who administered Dennis' will. Refer to image number 22120 of Dennis' service record on Ancestry.

In his Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record (dated 1919) it mentions "P.O.S.B." Which is/was Post Office Savings Bank.

When Dennis was st home for the birth of his daughter his occupation was caretaker ( crossed out). And commisionaire.  The solicitors was next door, so I believe he was the office commisionaire and caretaker.

When I received his death certificate from Leeds it stated paralysis of insane, aggravated whilst in service. My great uncle ( his nephew). Stated that he had been gassed in the Somme, and also was wounded, that the shellshock, had finished him off.
His wife was very close to the family, so they brought him home to worksop. His grave is next to his parents and grandparents.

I know he served with the 17th and 21st lancers, both in and after the Boar war, but something dreadful happened whilst serving with the cavalry of the machine gun Corp.
