IN RESPONSE TO ColC (Colin)
Thanks Colin for all your research. I was going on info from findmypast.co.uk; ancestry.com & scotlandspeople.gov.uk, but was getting late at night and was getting a bit sleepy so may have missed some exact details.
In your first message, what does OUC mean?

It's under census returns on scotlandspeople as:

Hugh & Donald McDonald were born out of wedlock, so I think that's the reason why the births are not registered.
Also interesting to note that on Mary's birth registration, her father's occupation is given as Calico printer, as was given on her marriage certificate in North Melbourne for him. Also the 1851 census mentions Mary's occupation as "Tailor jour" and on her marriage cert it mentions her as a "dressmaker"
Now I am trying to find out what happened to Alexander and his wife Ann in Australia or New Zealand after the marriage in 1859!
