Were entrants to the Royal Marines taught to swim?
« on: Sunday 14 November 21 15:01 GMT (UK) »
Iím looking at the record card for someone who enlisted in the Royal Marines in August 1899. Thereís a box At the bottom of the form which I havenít noticed before - ďAble to swim? - when tested - whereĒ. This man was tested on his swimming inDec 1899 and yes, he could swim.

So did entrants to the marines get swimming lessons?

When I was a child I used to stay with my uncle who was in the RM and we used to go swimming in the RM swimming baths at Deal.  :)

That link does show swimming lessons and mentions
Following the 1893 disaster, less than twelve months after the Deal Swimming Bath was built, an order was made directing that all Royal Marines must learn to swim before passing out of initial training.

I can't remember there being a shallow end, it was certainly deep
