130 Horseferry Road 1939 Register
« on: Sunday 14 November 21 16:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello
First of all sincere apologies if this topic has been covered before but....

My wife's first cousin x1 removed was a nurse who studied for her examination at King Edward Avenue, Dartford.

Winifred Phillips originated from Swansea but registered her marriage to her husband Joseph Annett in
Dartford, Kent.

However, in the 1939 register they have given their address as 130 Horseferry Road where there were over 40 entries at this address.

Trying to research the number and road throws up possibilities of a government building or London Communication College. It appears the Australian Army used the building during WW1 but unable to find their exit date.

Beside each entry in the 'see instructions' column is either:

AFS LCC with possibly a serial number by it's side or
WAFS LCC

However, beside my relative's names there are no entries in the 'see instructions' but his occupation was Caretaker Stoker (Heavy Worker) suggesting he was maintenance at tyis site.

The entry below Joseph Annett(e) was for a Gatekeeper (college).

If someone is able to confirm who was using this building in September 1939 I would be most grateful for any reply.

Best regards
Colin Hardy

Hi Colin

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

I think it would be Westminster College. Have a read here https://ocmch.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/ocmch-archives-research-1.pdf

Rosie, I think you are right with the ref to Auxilary Fire Service. From the document linked:

...Ideally placed for wartime operations in the heart of London, the College served as a training
ground for Fire Brigade volunteers,Ideally placed for wartime operations in the heart of London, the College served as a training ground for Fire Brigade volunteers...

Good morning

Thank you for your replies.

All of the 40 or so names above my wife's relative and who were at this location at the time of the register, as well as not knowing the hour of this role call may well suggest, as you have noted - voluntary attendance - as all of the guys on the list have varying occupations which did not seem to 'fit' the location.

So, once again my sincere thanks for assisting providing further reading through the links you provided.
