William and Elizabeth Whyte 1820-1855 Ireland
« on: Monday 15 November 21 04:15 GMT (UK) »
I am a direct descendent of this couple.  They were both born in Ireland according to the English census of 1861 and 1871. William was born circa 1828 and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) born circa 1825. Their only daughter Eliza Ann was baptised in 1855 in the Parish Church of St Peter  (Anglican) Liverpool and they were living in Richmond Row in Liverpool and William was a Police Officer. In the 1861 and 1871 census they were living in Cheshire where William was a police officer.  I have asked Cheshire Constabulary for any records of William - I have already confirmed he joined the Cheshire force 1 May 1858.  Prior to 1855 I can find no records for William and his wife and I have a potential death for William in 1881 and Elizabeth in 1894.  Sadly their names are common and I can only presume they came to England after the 1851 census and welcome any information anyone can share on a Whyte family in Ireland. I appreciate this is a very common surname, but any advice will be gratefully received.

If you can find Eliza Ann's birth certificate, that should give you her mother's maiden name, which in turn should help the search for them in Ireland.

Hi, I searched William Whyte and a wife Elizabeth.
This one is Elizabeth Baxter and William Whyte a Police Con.
As Elwyn says check the birth of Eliza Ann to make sure.

Looking at 1851 census there are William Whyte/White in Lancashire as well as Elizabeth's with various last names which makes me wonder if perhaps they were already in Lancashire and married in Lancashire prior to Eliza's birth. Lancashire was attractive to the Irish due to work prospects. You need to get Eliza Ann birth cert to get certainty on parents' names.

I was just looking at Eliza's birth on familysearch. org and another thing you have to consider is that both William & Elizabeth had the last name of Whyte.

On Eliza Ann's marriage record, one of the witnesses is a Lucy Whyte. Could she be a cousin?

Thank you all very much for your advice.  I will order Eliza Ann's birth certificate now, and update the thread in a few days.
