Seeking Jessie BRAYFORD nee TERRELL
« on: Tuesday 16 November 21 11:33 GMT (UK) »
I'm not sure how to use this site and I'm quite young (turning 20 this weekend) so apologies if I mess anything up.

My paternal great-grandmother was Jessie Terrell and was born in Boulder. One of her daughters was taken away from her for unknown reasons and is my grandmother, who is still alive but living in a home.
Due to her traumatic childhood my father didn't learn a lot about his mum's family but did love his grandma Jess, who he always says I look like. I've seen photos, and there's no denying she's my relative.
What's curious is that she was quite a dark skinned lady and everyone thought she was Indigenous. My dad looks Black too-- is asked on the streets and the trains where his mob is from. My sister is quite ethnically ambiguous and I'm more tanned than my white friends.
However we have no confirmation on our heritage and we can't ask Nanna because she is too far gone from dementia to recall anything like that.
I've been doing research today and learnt that GGrandma Jessie had a lot of children and relatives I have never heard about, and learnt that her mother's name was Emily Jane and that Emily's father had the name SEEKAY and was either Chinese or Malaysian. Wow!!!!
I want more information on Jessie's family-- why aren't her children (my Nanna and her siblings) listed anywhere online? Why were they taken away from her/was it to do with the Stolen Generations? Why was she so dark skinned?
I also found her death listed online with her parents noted as William and Rachel with no surnames. I cannot find anything to do with a William or Rachel-- other sites are telling me her parents were Emily Jane and Richard Hattam.

Please help!!! And many thanks.

That death is for a Jessie TERRELL who was born around 1885.  Your Jessie would not have died with the surname TERRELL if she married.

This your Jessie's birth:

1913
TERRELL,    Jessie
Female
Boulder
#357

You would need to purchase her birth certificate to find information on her parents.

Marriage

1932
TERRELL,    Jessie
BRAYFORD, Joseph C
Boulder
#36

https://bdm.justice.wa.gov.au/_apps/pioneersindex/default.aspx

You will not find much detail regarding births, deaths and marriages for later generations as this info is not publically released to protect the privacy of living people.

A rather amusing incident, arising out of the appointment of a J. P. for Moama, is worthy of notice. .....

Yes, E** is my grandmother, and I recognise the surname BUNKER as her adoptive family's name. My dad would talk about Pop Bunker.
I wish I knew anything about why E was put in foster care whereas Jessie Brayford had other children that she raised.

Was your mother the only child from that relationship?  By the time Joseph BRAYFORD died they were both with other partners but I cannot find how long this was using electoral rolls.

Joseph was killed in an accident in 1953 and the person calling herself his wife was named Doreen Marie.  I can't see any evidence of a marriage.  Jessie was with Charles John Rankin ELLIS and married him in 1953 when Joseph died, so there was likely no divorce.  Charles had divorced his first wife in 1940.

They were together from at least 1942 when Charles enlisted and named Jessie as his next of kin.

If the BRAYFORD marriage didn't last long then Jessie would probably not have been able to work and care for a child as well.
