Could this be our Joseph Dickinson?
« on: Thursday 18 November 21 18:34 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching for a long time, trying to find what happened to my husband's  uncle, Joseph Dickinson born February 1889, Altcar, Lancashire. The last census I found for him was 1901, Gore Cottage, Altcar, Lancashire, with his parents Peter and Margaret Dickinson.

Family lore has it that he went to Manchester to work. I have found 1939 details of a Joseph Dickinson married to Margaret, living 1 Brunswick St., Manchester.  I have obtained a marriage certificate, dated  16 July 1917, St. John's Church, Salford, showing Joseph marrying widow Margaret Tennant; she was previously Lowe.   She had a son from her first marriage, but don't know if she and Joseph had any children.

Where do I go from here please???

Was his fathers name Peter as per your opening post?  If not - wrong marriage

If they married 1917 - & had any children - look for Dickinson births with mmn LOWE (not Tennant)

In the Probate Index there is an entry in respect of a Joseph Dickinson, of 1 Beckett Street in Gorton,
who died on 15th February 1965 in the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

I believe that he is your man - because Administration was granted on 22nd April to: 'Ann Doodson, a widow'.

As you will already probably know, Doodson was the married name of Joseph's younger sister Annie.

OOh, hadn't had notification of replies so just popped in to find all this interest. :)
CaroleW - Yes on M.C. Joseph's pa was Peter Dickinson, deceased, corporation employee. He died 1912.

Ladyhawk - On 1939 register d.o.b. is given as 24.2.1889. from church baptism records d.o.b. 22.2.1889 = 2 days difference.

willyam -  Yes  Joseph's sister Annie married Harold Doodson, he died  1961, so in 1965 she was indeed a widow. Annie died 1989!!  Annie's sister Mabel married Harold's brother Albert.  I never thought to search probate records.  Is there any other info on the probate record?

garstonite - Yep, there were 10 siblings, my husband's ma was the youngest. Her brother John Burgess Dickinson born 1895 died 23 March 1918, Somme, France, and he is remembered at St.Michael and all Angels, Altcar, on the church war memorial, also on Formby war memorial. MY husband's pa lost his two brother in W.W.1, both detailed at St. Michael's, and one on Formby war memorial.  I am at the moment arranging to have the other brother's details put on this memorial; they are both now on the online info. Joseph and James Lloyd, also of Altcar.

I will send for his death certificate, poss give name of informant.

Familiar names in the replies, usually seen on L & S.W. L. F.H.S. site!!!!

Thank you all so much for your interest, help and knowledge - much appreciated. Another query finished happily.

Hopefully a good outcome to your search - but be aware:

as the probate index is only in respect of Administration, this usually implies that there was no Will and thus no further information is likely to be forthcoming if you pay 1.50 for a copy of the paperwork

and

as the application for the administration of Joseph's Estate further suggests that he had no immediate next-of-kin at the time of his death, there is a likelihood that the informant on his death record might well only be a hospital bereavement officer - rather than an identifiable relative.

Willyam,    I nearly typed Will.iam ;),

Thank you for that advice, I will leave the Administration, but will apply for death certificate in order to find out cause of death.

One missing piece of information, where was he in 1911,  I have not been able to find Joseph in this census.

Again my thanks.

big g,

You have advised that you have the marriage certificate for Joseph & Margaret in Salford in July 1917.

Are you able to share the details therein regarding his address & occupation?

I ask this because, given his year of birth, there is a strong possibility that Joseph might have been in the military prior to his marriage and that he also could have been discharged (perhaps as unfit for further service) and thus able to marry before the end of hostilities.

I mention this because I have been tracking 2 military brothers - one of which married in August 1917 after being discharged and the other of which did not appear in the 1911 census because he was a deserter on the day that the census was taken.

Always a long shot of course, but there might just be something on the marriage certificate that could help.
