I have just found(I think)  on Family Search that my son in law's great  great grandad was born in Meerut India in 1831.The 26th Foot Regiment is mentioned.His name--William Thompson.
At this stage I am not sure if there is a connection but I have the son in laws great grandad also born at Meerut 1853.His name William Thompson his wife Sarah.
Can anyone give me any help ?

The 1853 birth/baptism record for William Thompson (born in Meerut) is on FindMyPast. It should give you the parents' names and father's occupation - if not on Family Search.

It appears there were several men with that name in Meerut at the time.

William Thompson - born 1820, died 1846
William Thompson - born 1816, died 1854
William Thompson - born 1811, died ??
William Thompson - born 1831, died 1833 (see earlier post above)
