What happened to Charles William Wood Blackburn?
« on: Friday 19 November 21 12:36 GMT (UK) »
Charles William Wood Blackburn was born  in Bramhope abt 1858, baptised in Otley on 15 Aug 1858 s/o William (Depledge) Blackburn and Hannah (nee Wood). His father was a butler at Kerskill  / Creskeld Hall. I have him with his family up to 1871 in Wakefield, then nothing more.
Can anyone find what happened to him please?

Background on some of his siblings

Thank you but none of the birthplaces are right. In 1881, I found a Charles b Wakefield (where he was living 1n 1871) as a boarder in Portsea, occupation Stoker Royal Navy. Age a bit out, but it's often the case for lodgers, boarders, servants etc where someone unrelated fills in the form.  But just a possibility, although I can't find a birth record for a Charles b Wakefield ca 1857

in 1891 a Charles Blackburn leading stoker RN is a boarder with widow Elizabeth Airs and daughter Lydia. It looks as if he marries Elizabeth in 1892, but his birthplace has changed to Petersfield Hants, and is consistently Petersfield in 1901 and 1911. But there doesn't seem to be a birth for a Charles Blackburn in Petersfield district at the right time either.

Hi Lizzie,

I think you may be correct about the Charles BLACKBURN (stoker).

The UK, Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services, 1848-1939 on Ancestry:
Lists his birth as 18 June 1858 Crigleston York.
(isn't Crigglestone where the family were living in 1881?).

The 1881 census seems to have him in 2 census records-both in Portsea. One is for a stoker-NOT on board the HMS Asia-born Crigleston and the other is the boarder b. Wakefield.

I guess the birth/marriage certs are out of the question?

Yes his family were in Crigglestone in 1881.
I had seen the HMS Asia, but thought it was a different person. I'll recheck it.
I wonder why later censuses have birthplace as Petersfield. The family was in Buriton briefly but I thought that was just before he was born.
