Who were The NICE brothers, please... London 1880s perhaps
« on: Friday 19 November 21 14:15 GMT (UK) »
Please help me ID the musicians in this photo.
They called themselves The NICE brothers.

NICE is believed to be a real surname, not a stage name.

The older man, on the Left, was born about 1855, in London we think.
(I also have a photo of the older man with more musical instruments.)
I don't know anything about the younger man. But he may well be a brother!

Probably gave concerts in central London.
Do they appear in any concert programmes or posters or adverts?...

Thank you

What documents make you believe they were the Nice brothers? &in London?

The posters on the wall behind them don't relate to London either.

If you believe that Nice was their real surname - have you looked at any census entries to identify them?

1891 has 400+ male entries for that surname but you can narrow it down by approximate birthyear to around 70

Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

Thank you for your interest

I know the source of the photo and it is definitely a London family.

What do you think it might say on the posters?

Thanks for helping.

William NICE? (the older man)??

He could have made his own instruments and also composed music to be played (or arranged existing tunes for stringed instruments e.g. banjo, mandolin etc)

That's excellent, thank you!
It's Indexed on Ancestry as NEIL...

Just gives initials for the parents i.e. W, and A, drat!

How could we expand this? Look forwards or backwards... ?
