This is not conclusive, but Robert's next door neighbour (head of household) in 1861 is Robert.  It is not an unusual name. but I wonder if the enumerator made a mistake?

There are so many coincidences here, it is difficult to say it is wrong!

I can't find this Robert in 1871 (though he might have died!) nor can I find an Alice BECK.

I still think an 1851 look-up might help?  although Thomas/ Robert would be unmarried in all likelihood it might help to determine whether there are 2 of them!

There is a Thomas Hindl age 39 with wife Alice in 1871 and an Elizabeth. Also an Elizabeth Hodgkinson, sister in law and niece Mary Ann.  Would this be the one?

Is that just Thomas Hindl ie no Beck on the end? Whereabouts is that? Is the sis-in-law married because Alice's maiden name is alledgedly Kenyon?

I'm thinking maybe Robert is really Thomas in 1861, not 100% sure but then can we ever be!

Just wish I could find them in 1871 and then I could link James with his father Thomas (Hindle or otherwise) and things would seem clearer. How badly can Beck have been mistranscribed?!? I've even tried looking just for Sarah Jane (no surname input) who was bapt in 1870 thinking that, as long as she didn't die very young, she'd be easy to spot but no luck so far. They've GOT to be there somewhere bearing in mind all those children were baptised in Preston all around and through that period!

The marriage think bothers me too - that I can't track down an Alice Kenyon and Thomas Hindle Beck marrying. (except for the Thomas Hindle and Alice Kenyon in Bolton).

As for Hindle appearing elsewhere down the generations, well, I've not come across it as yet but I know what you mean because I have others in the tree that have done something similar.

Perhaps I'll post for an 1851 look up but not sure what info I can provide them, not much really!

Sharon I have had another go and changed the first letter on Beck through the alphabet Even tried changing the vowel and with a h at the end isnstead of a k, nothing worked. The marriage of Thomas is what is needed although Bolton is quite a way from Preston. There are so many Thomas Becks in Lancashire, it was a fairly common name and this makes it difficult to pin him down. The change of occupations is also strange if it is the same Thomas.
Will have another think overnight.
