New Road Prison - William Roberts Stokes
« on: Monday 22 November 21 07:07 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone suggest how and where I might locate records of a Prisoner - William Roberts Stokes he was born Buckinghamshire in 1849 and on the 1891 Census he was in New Road Prison the only reference I have discovered was admission on 31 Jan 1891 and was discharged on the 30 April 1891 Reference No. 1196 this was in a note with no source details.
In the 1881 Census he was with his sister Susannah (Stokes) Coles.

Any advice appreciated

Sorry-kind of a poor attempt on my part!

April 4, 1891 - Buckingham Express   FMPast Newspapers

William Stokes, labourer, Buckingham, was charged with stealing from the taproom of the Royal Oak inn, on the night of March 28th a pair of shoes, value 3s. 10d., the property of Joeeph North, hay-tyer, Buckingham.----
................

It seems the police tracked him down (with the help of his brother of Mitre Street) at the home of Robert Brooks of Bone-hill. William had the boots but claimed,"I know nothing about them;they told me they were mine".

At the court hearing William's employer (Mr H G King) said he'd always found him honest but after a pint or two or beer he was quite dazed and did not seem in his right mind.

Committed to Oxford for one month's hard labour and but for his previous good character the sentence would have been severer.

admission on 31 Jan 1891

That date must be a mistake then - should be 31 March.

Thanks to you you both saves me some research and sounds like a few to many drinks for a lad about town so to speak.
