Neither census prior to the 1901 has an Alexander Smith born Kinney/ Kemnay so who were his parents?

Have you now found him on earlier censuses?

Thanks very much for this.
I will try and find this census. I know they had at least two other children, Alexander, born 1901 and my grandfather, William, born 1904. Alexander and William were born in Auchterarder. This is my starting point and trying to work back.

Do you have the original census 1901 on Scotland's People ?
Findmypast also has birth down as Kinney checking the original on SP might show different ..Maybe if you could post his parents names we can try and find him on other census records

There is a death for a Mary Bain other name Smith 1905 Auchterarder
A possible marriage for a Alexander Smith to a Cecilia Michelson 1907 Perth
Looking at the index on Scotland's People 1911 lists a Cecilia Smith on the census with Alexander Smith in Wigtown Stranraer along with other children

Rosie
Hi Rosie
I have the 1901 census and it gives Kinney, Aberdeenshire as place of birth. There are three children, Lilly, Nelly and Rebecca. All these children born in Stirling
Two other children are born Alexander 1901 and William in 1904 (he's my grandfather). Two boys born in Auchterarder.
Alexander married Mary Bayne (at times spelt Bain) in 13/4/1894 in Auchterarder. His address was Falkirk (at that led me down so many rabbit holes as I had thought he originated from Falkirk!!!)
You are right Mary died in 1905.
It is possible Alexander was the father of a girl Janet Ferguson, born 24/5/1907.
Alexanders parents, according to his marriage certificate was Alexander Smith (Ploughman) and Betty Paterson. The only marriage I can find for an Alexander Smith and anything like Betty Paterson is a lady called Eliza Milne Paterson. This marriage, 9/6/1868 was in Banff, Aberdeenshire. I am not too sure they are mine as he was living in Glasgow and was a bank clerk.
CaroleW has found an Alexander Smith in the 1911 census living in Wigton. I need to trace this link.
Thanks again
