Mary MITCHELL who married John OSBORNE - 1842 at St Erth
« on: Wednesday 24 November 21 17:41 GMT (UK) »
Mary MITCHELL
Baptised 6 Mar 1821 St Keverne, Cornwall, England, base born Daughter of Ann MITCHELL of Ponsengath. When she married, her Father was not named / unknown

I have been unsuccessful at proving her Mother. I have found a young Ann MITCHELL who would have been 17 but she was born in Truro. Might there have been a 'home for unwed Mothers' in St Keverne?

This particular Ann was then married in 1825 while still under the age of 21 and there is no sign of this Mary in any Census after Ann was married. She did, however, have a Daughter with her new husband that they called Mary. Since her husband was a Doctor, it's possible that she left Mary to be raised by her parents or someone else. Can anyone tell me if there is any logic to this? OR, can anyone help with this mystery??

Many thanks!

Karen Stevens

It is unlikely that there would be a home for unmarried mothers, more likely to be in the workhouse.

I am slightly confused.  Mary Mitchell born c 1821 St Keverne - married John Osborne - you say you can't find her after 1825.

Have you considered the 1851. Foundery, St Erth, Penzance
Piece 1917 folio 9 page 11
John Osborne 36 born Cornwall
Mary 28 bn St Kverne
with daughters Mary Ann 6, Nanny 4 & Elizabeth Ann 1

Thank you, Rosie99.

Apologies for the confusion in my post. I did mean only that I did not find my Mary in the Census WITH the Ann that I was looking at for her Mother. I have Mary and John in 1851 through 1881 and Mary in 1891 after the death of John.

(This Ann married John Thomas MILLETT)

Thank you for taking the time to write your answer.

Kind Regards,

Karen

Thank you, Osprey, for your replies to my post.

There's a great deal here to work through!  If Ann MICHELL married the same day as she Baptised her Daughter, but did not name William TRIPCONY as the 'inferred Father', then, would you agree, the Father was certainly someone else? This Ann seems a whole lot more likely than anyone I've looked at previously!

Interesting that the name, TRIPCONEY, changes to TRIP. Not that uncommon, I suppose.

Many thanks, again, for taking the time to answer my (confusing) query.

Kindest Regards,

Karen Stevens

William may have been the father, but as the child was born before the marriage, the cleric may have not recorded his name as Mary was born Michell. It wouldn't really be up to her what details were recorded.

I found the Trip(p) family by chance as I was looking for Francis as his was a less common name and searched for Trip* and the family showed up. Hayle Foundry drew in workers from various rural parishes. You can see the drop in population of St Keverne on the Genuki page
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CON/StKeverne#Population

Tripcony wasn't unusual in St Keverne and some who lived there started using Trip(p) later on. First appearance of Trip in the parish on the opc database is in the 1840s.

Thanks very much, Osprey.

I'm leaning toward a different Father. I would assume that Mary would have been raised within the Tripconey/Tripp family, with her Mother, and would have known that William was her Father, if he was. I assume, if that were the case, she'd have named him as her Father when she married. Alas, we'll never know, though!

Thanks, again!

Karen

Well, Osprey, I think you may well have been correct when you stated that William Tripcony could have been Mary's father! I have just checked my DNA matches and found a 5th Cousin, descended from William's Brother, Anthony Tripcony (junior) ! ! ! ! !

Thank you, again!

Cheers, Karen
