Edith Janice Craine. 1881- ?
« on: Thursday 25 November 21 11:44 GMT (UK) »
Is it possible  to find a date of death for this lady who possibly died in the late 1930s in New York.  A writer, principaly of childrens' books, she is the Edith J Craine, novelist, single, born Ohio 1881 on 1930 US census living Manhattan. According to a mention on her mother's entry on Findagrave (Julia Bardwell Drisko, 1853-1933) she was last known to be in New York in 1935, then no sighting. Possibly deceased by 1940 as not on that census - not the Edith J Craine institutionalized in Ohio as that person is also on 1930 census and died 1943.

Thanks
John

There is mention of her in various articles in 1935/1936/1937, and then she disappears.

She had a book "Ki-Ki: A Circus Trouper" that came out in Nov 1937 and that is the last I see her mentioned in the newspapers.

And the last book published on a list of her works available used at abebooks:

I think the paucity of New York BMD records online may be the reason her death date is not readily traceable. Previous searchers have been unable to find it .
Is it possible to find if she made a will. In England we have the Probate Index which lists all will makers. Is there any similar way in America  ?

Just my 2 cents worth, someone else might know better:

I never heard of a national index of wills. I'm almost positive there isn't one.
Likewise for statewide indexes, but I'm not as sure about that. Some states might have a statewide index.
Most likely you would have to know what county she died in, and then locate the probate court for that county.
The exceptions would be very old wills, 18th or 19th C, many of which have been filmed and put on line.

Even if you can't find a death record you would think there would have been an obit. somewhere as she was well known.

Are there any literary magazines online anywhere?
Cross Steeple Claydon Bucks,  Jennings Steeple Claydon Bucks,  Steel Byfield Northants,  Rogers Northants,  Wheeler Oxon,  Roberts Oxon,  Bonham Oxon/ Middleton Cheney Northants,  Maycock Northants,  Abbott Northants , Newman Northants, Buckingham Bucks, Hart Warks, Newth Gloucs.

I think the paucity of New York BMD records online may be the reason her death date is not readily traceable.

The actual records for New York are generally not online, but there are comprehensive death indexes for this time frame.  New York City death records through 1949 are here - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2240477 The images of the death records can be obtained for free through their look-up service if you find something on there.  There is an index of deaths through 1948 here - https://www.italiangen.org/death-records-nyc-muncipal-archives/ There are also two indexes for New York City on Ancestry.

If she died in NY state outside of NY City, there is an index here - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2803479

Her brother "Robert Craine died in Wyoming on 11/19/1955 and was buried at the Rawlins Cemetery," according to her mother's information on findagrave.

Have you looked for his obituary to see if it mentions her?

link to her mother's findagrave, just so it is on this thread

-------
She applied for a social security number in New York State, and that didn't start until 1936.

------------
She is said to be listed in
American Women Playwrights, 1900-1930. A checklist. Compiled by Frances Diodato Bzowski. Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1992

This has some of the information from her Social Security application - https://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=3060&mtch=1&cat=all&tf=F&q=121031077&bc=sl,sd&rpp=10&pg=1&rid=1392450  The first Social Security number was issued in Nov. 1936, and she was listed in their database as of June 1937, so she would have applied somewhere in that time frame.
