Understanding the 1939 England & Wales Register Annotations
« on: Thursday 25 November 21 13:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

Newcomer here.  I've been doing bits of research into my family over the last 5 years or so and wondering if anybody could shed some light on some annotations on the 1939 register and there meaning please.

There has always been talk in our family that my Grandad, Charles Bryan Reynolds b. 02/04/29 d. 25/06/12 had an adopted brother.  Having now found my Great Grandad James Reynolds b. 05/10/02 I have found him on the 1939 register (attached).

There are 2 lines that I believe relate to the adoption.

The adoption is of Bryan F Williamson b. 08/09/1938

In red there is a change of surname to Reynolds with an annotation of By Adopt. IC 04/07/46
Then in green there is a change to his first name to Michael B F with the annotations 1/2 M/C BRA 20/06/68

I assume this means that he was adopted in 1946 but unsure what the 1/2MC means?  Also on the same record is a Kathleen Williamson b. 04/09/09.  Both say they are Single at the time of the register.  Next to Kathleen's entry is Md 30 5 49 KEA.  Again i assume this means married but unsure.  Happy for nay help please.  Thanks

Welcome to rootschat  :)

KEA & BRA are the codes for the area in which the adjustment was made
https://www.findmypast.co.uk/articles/1939-register-enumeration-districts

BRA   Middlesex   Staines   UD
KEA   Yorkshire, West Riding   Halifax CB

The dates are generally when the adjustments are done eg the green writing implies that they saw the marriage certificate on 20 June 1968 and changed his name to Michael B.F.  Looking at the GRO index he married in 1961

ADDED It looks like his previous surname was Wilkinson not Williamson
Births Sep qtr 1938
Wilkinson    Bryan F
Mothers maiden surname Wilkinson
Bradford reg district    9b   171

Presumably Kathleen was Bryans mother  :-\
Marriage June qtr 1949
Sutcliffe    John S
Wilkinson    Kathleen
Halifax    2b   1238

This would tie in with them seeing a marriage certificate in May 1949
