Jane Hughes
« on: Friday 26 November 21 16:48 GMT (UK) »
Benjamin Thorpe married a Jane Hughes on 1818 in Mansfield.  In 1837 there is a newspaper article stating that Benjamin (labourer) was committed to the House of correction at Southwell to hard labour for one calendar month, for neglecting to maintain his wife Jane Thorpe (he being able to do so)  whereby she became chargeable to the parish of Mansfield.  Where would I be able to find any information on this on Ancestry or other sites?  I cannot find a death for her at all although he married an Elizabeth Peel  on 5th June 1838.  There is a Jane Thorpe died 1837 but she is Aged 0.

Hi Rosie where did you find that I have searched the GRO and cannot find the death at all.  But that looks likely

It is from the Nottinghamshire burial index which is available to view on FindMyPast.   I wonder if the GRO index for that death you found should have read age 50 and not age 0  :-\

Unfortunately the images of the GRO index that you can view on freebmd do not give an age for that Mansfield death in 1837.  The indexes used by the GRO on their website are apparently a different set.

Unfortunately this was not the death for Jane Thorpe.  I am sure though that the burial record is her, in the Workhouse.  As the Death register only started 1st July 1837 is it feasible that the death was not registered?

Unfortunately none of these match my Jane Thorpe.  But is it feasible as I said to Rosie that as burial was 2nd September and so death must have been in August that the death was not registered as the register started 1st July 1837?
