'The Cellars' a Public House in 12 North Street, Gosport
« on: Saturday 27 November 21 18:06 GMT (UK) »
A relative was the landlord of 'The Cellars' in the  1890s and I would like to illustrate his family history with a picture of the 'Cellars'.  Is the public house still standing?  I've has no success finding a picture - can anyone help?

There seems to be a book called Lost Pubs of Gosport **

Dates mentioned for your pub 1875-1903.

I don't know if there would be a photo in the book though.

A modern map or google map of the address would show the area now.

**you can page through the book online with photos and maps but can't see one of yours at first glance.

I have a book 'Gosport - A Pictorial History". 1993 by Ian Edelman

There is a photograph
"Pipe works in North Street c 1904. During the early years of the 20th century, extensive improvements to the Gosport sewage system were undertaken. The Black Lion public house at 47 North Street can be seen in the background and the Sun public house is on the left."

Not exactly what you want, (and there is a big hole in the ground  ;D) but might serve to illustrate what sort of street it was.
I have two pubs in my Gosport family

One of which, The Balaclava Arms in Forton Street  was really just a small house on a corner. As your man in the census only seems to have himself and his wife, (no Barmaid living in) perhaps it is likely to be similar.

Have you seen https://www.gosportsociety.co.uk/SIX%20TAVERNS.pdf (No mention of The Cellars).

there is a handy map at the end. You can see the Black Lion and The Sun marked, The photograph in the book is I would say taken from another 5 or 6 numbers before The Sun.

Many thanks for the interesting replies.   However, everything points to The Cellars is no longer in existance.

If you look at Streetview, you will see mainly modern buildings around the North Street area.  There were many air raids on Portsmouth and Gosport during WW2 which severely damaged or destroyed large areas.  It seems likely that this is the reason for the pub's disappearance.

The final newspaper mention appears to be in July 1917 when it was offered for sale by Messrs J J Young & Sons "on compensation of licence".

Thanks Shaun.  I don't have access to Find my Past but the article appears to announce the sale and demise of the pub.  The date of 1917 is at least a footnote to the history I'm putting together.
