Adoption, Hostels and Name Change
« on: Monday 29 November 21 22:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone
I'm researching a family where a child was adopted out.
We have the birth certificate - adopted is written in the right hand margin.
The story is that the child went to Australia. (I think that's a red herring)
The child was born in Greenhill Hostel, Kidderminster but the mother was sent there from Nuneaton. I've found a little bit of info on the hostel.
Would this have been attached to an adoption agency?
Without any info of the family the child was adopted into, do I have a cat in hells chance of actually getting anywhere?
We are trying to convince the half sister to do a DNA test.
Advice, info etc very welcome from you lovely lot.
Ta
Lisa

Can you expand on this please.

"We have the birth certificate - adopted is written in the right hand margin."

What is the birth date?

How many dates are there on the document?

What does each date identify?

The certificate is.......handwritten?....typed?.....a transcription?

Is "adoption" handwritten?.......contemporary with the recording of the birth (same coloured ink)

or was it added by another researcher?.

British Home Children were sent to various countries even as recently as the 1970s without the express authority of their families.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Children

Also see the sticky thread from Berlin Bob at the top of the Australia Board.

So it may well be that the thought that the child went to Australia is worthwhile following up.

The word adopted is Handwritten but not dated.
Birth date: 14 August 1935
Other date: registration date of 15 SEP 1935
Certificate is a photocopy of the Handwritten entry. Adopted is signed by the senior registrar

If the child was b 1935 then any adoption would probably have been official & (hopefully) documented so have you contacted Social Services in the area in which the birth took place?

Not yet. We are looking at that next. We are assuming the adoption took place in Kidderminster as the mother was from Nuneaton and she did not return with the child.

Might be the best way forward.  If nothing comes out if it then DNA seems the next step

This will probably not work but you know their sex and date of birth why not enter these on the 1939 register to see if anything jumps out.  Nothing to lose.

Unless the person remained in England & is deceased the 1939 entry will be redacted.  If they did go to Australia & died there it will remain redacted for 100yrs as the death would not be notified here
