Edward Woods and Mary Fisher from County Tipperary
« on: Tuesday 30 November 21 13:24 GMT (UK) »
Edward Woods and Mary nee Fisher arrived in Sydney aboard the "Glenswilly" as Bounty Immigrants on 11th March 1841.  The ships manifest says they are farm servants from Cashel, might be Cashill.  Edwards parents were Edward and Winnifred Woods and Marys parents George and Mary Fisher.  Neither surnames seems very Irish.  A cousin tried to find information on these people, no luck.  They did state their religion was RC, they were illiterate and in good health and were brought to the colony by Ships Agent John Marshall.  I am wondering if anyone knows if records are available in the Cashel area for 1810 - 1841 which might have these names listed.  Thank you bkr188

Hi,
Try here. This is the Cashel Church Records.
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0253
This is from a ship list.....where you see (Tipp) that means Tipperary Town, in County Tipperary.
WOOD   Edward      1841   26   (Tipp)   Edward ? Winifred   xx   {husb of Mary,28}   Ship =   Glenswilly
WOOD   Mary      1841   28   Cl ? He ? ashill   George / Mary  FISHER   xx                     ( Cashel ?)   {wife of Edward,26}   Ship =   Glenswilly
You may be able to work back from 1841 for the marriage in the link above.
This is from Griffiths Valuation in 1851  poss a relative.

If you are a member of Ancestry it's easier to search that site as you can use their names.

:)Wow. This is fabulous. Thank you. Edward and Mary have many descendants in Australia, particularly near Canberra where they finally settled.  I am more than happy to share this information to those interested.
Your information is the first authenticated Irish evidence I have of this family. My cousin, who first delved into our family's past, came across a record from Cashel for a baptism of a Mary Fisher, daughter of George and Mary Fisher (nee Kennedy) dated 2 April 1815.  The Glenswilly information has her age as 28 years which indicates she would have been born 1813.  The evidence to link her to this record is that the ship document her parents names as George and Mary.  Edward and Mary named their firstborn George Edward (the other children being Edward, Thomas and William.)

Would it have been usual in Ireland for a baptism to be conducted 2 years after the child was born?  Once again thank you for a start to my Irish search.
