Deciphering Griffiths Valuation
« on: Thursday 02 December 21 11:52 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,
I am a newbie here so hope i have found the right place for this question.
On some Griffiths property valuations lines the text
"House, Offices, Land" appears
On others I see
"Herds, Ho. Offs and Land"
What is the significance of this difference. In the first case does it imply that the land was NOT used for cattle or sheep being instead used for crops?
Thanks
Phil

One is a family home, outhouses and land
the other is a Herd's house (person looking after animals, probably a fairly simple structure) outhouses and land
Neither tells you how the land is being used.
This is a good guide to understand GV

Could be an abbreviation of hereditaments.
From Collins:
1. any kind of property capable of being inherited
2. property that before 1926 passed to an heir if not otherwise disposed of by will

Thanks very much for this. I have downloaded the really useful reference guide you mention.
It mentions the term "Herd's house"  but without any specific definition. From the context though it sounds like the sort of structure you suggested.

In Ireland, herd's house is usually a shepherd's house.
You can follow a property from the printed version of Griffith's until about 1930 in Valuation Revision Books. Those for Northern Ireland Counties are searchable on PRONI's site (free)-
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/information-and-services/search-archives-online/valuation-revision-books

Another interesting way to get an idea of a property is on 1901 and 1911 census (also free) as if breaks down office housing, etc. into more details.

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
