Albert Edward Spanner
« on: Thursday 02 December 21 12:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello all, I am new to this site and have been researching my family history for some time. Having managed to trace my paternal line to about 1600 I then tried to trace my maternal side. I have my grandfather's birth certificate. He was Sydney John Spanner, born on 6th March 1884. in Southampton. His father is Albert Edward Spanner and it lists his mother as Alice Spanner formerly Saunders. I can find no marriage certificate or census information about them both. I know all sides of my family were in and out of the workhouse, that's why not listed together in the census maybe. The name Alice Cropp appears often to be connected to Albert but it contradicts the birth certificate. Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated, thank you, John.

it is quite simple really
Alice Saunders MAIDEN name - married a Mr Cropp - I haven't looked for that yet - I will let you
Mr Cropp Dies
and Alice Cropp marries Albert ERNEST Spanner - not Edward ...TEN years after Sidneys birth- but in reality Alice was Saunders before Cropp - OR - she was born Saunders and may have taken her Step fathers name of Cropp??

Marriages Dec 1894   (>99%)
Cotterell    Eliza        Portsea    2b   988
Cropp    Alice        Portsea    2b   988
Langley    Benjamin John        Portsea    2b   988
Spanner    Albert Ernest        Portsea    2b   988
............................................................................
without sounding a smarty pants - do you understand why Cropp keeps Cropping up ...pun ...lol

ADDED - Can't find a marriage Saunders / Cropp - so I presume it was her step fathers name ??
