Wilhelmina Violet Humphreys
« on: Friday 03 December 21 14:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Irish birth records say that Wilhelmina Violet Humphreys was born in the 4th Quarter of 1916 in the district of Gorey, County Wexford. (No mother’s name given.)

The 1939 Register has:

Violet W Humphreys (school teacher) was born on 29 Jul 1918. She is living with a single relative, William J Humphreys, who was born on 13 Jun 1889. They were living in Oxfordshire, England in 1939, close to Pangbourne. Berkshire.

The William J Humphreys, mentioned above, was born in Gorey, Wexford - the eldest child of Richard and Amelia Humphreys. The surname is spelt 'Humphries' in the civil record. The youngest child in the family, Joseph Burrowes Humphreys (1905 - ), married at Easthampstead, Berkshire in 1925 and was still there in 1939. Easthampstead is no great distance from Pangbourne.

The problem is:  are there two separate girls WVH and VWH ? There doesn't appear to be a birth record corresponding to 29 Jun 1918.

I suspect that Martha Ann Humphreys (1899 - ) - sister of William and Joseph might have had one (or two) births out of wedlock.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Gordon

Wilhelmina was registered in the 4th quarter but was born on 29th July 1916 (registered 18th October). The informant was Emily Humphreys (who may have been her mother). Her birth at Ballinahown (sic) townland.

Note this 1911 census for Martha Ann (aged 12) with her mother Amelia Humphreys.

Thanks for this.

So it looks as if the correct date of birth was 29th July 1916.

I wonder if the informant 'Emily' is really 'Amelia'?

Hence, when she got to England, she swapped the order of her Christian Names and made herself two years younger, in order to disguise the birth out of wedlock.

Just read your reply.

William John Humphries born 13th June 1889 at Ballinahown (sic). His mother was Emily Humphries nee Tector.

Here's the marriage of Richard HUMPHRYS and Emily TECTOR on 6th September 1888 at Kilnamanagh Parish Church.

Looks like Emily also called herself Amelia Margaret.

Birth years (and birth dates) are often not accurate on the 1939 register. I had a great aunt who reduced in age by 7 years on the 1939.
