Yes Kay99, I think you will be correct. I'm going to have to look at them again - I collected the details as I assumed they were all connected but hadn't worked out exactly how.

The Phillis Bratton is very interesting Ladyhawk. I hadn't seen that before. And Heywood you are right, Joseph Hattersley & Mary Bratton Jones's eldest child was Phillis, 1843 (my great grandma x2). My great-aunt was called Phyllis after her.

Mary Bratton Jones appears to be very like her relatives  :) :)

Maybe the simplest solution is that John Jones and Jane Bratton didn't marry.  So the children used both names but generally used their mother's maiden name for legal documents  :-\

They seem to have changed religions.
I would try the parish records of the United Free Church on Lever Street as 2 children married there.
Or any other Methodist/ Weslyan Methodist Church in the area

Thanks for everyones help :)

I have been fiddling for burials and found the burial of JB Jones's first wife Jane in 1840 in Manchester Cheetham Hill Wesleyan Cemetery.  Jane is listed as 60.  The grave owner is John Jones and their address 12 Redfern St where JB Jones was living in 1841

So the 1831 marriage of John Bratton Jones to Sarah Hattersley was not JB Jones but more likely his son  :-\   The couple's (John B and Sarah Jones) first son also John Bratton Jones died in 1839 and was buried in Manchester Cheetham Hill Wesleyan Cemetery  However the couple had another son Charles Bratton Jones b 1836.   I can't see the family in 1841 but I think son Charles is living with his aunt Mary Hattersley nee Bratton and family in 1841 as below   Wonder what happened to JB Jnr and Sarah??  Still looking at burials

That’s a great find and it's the same grave number (3013) for burial of John Bratton Jones age 6 in 1839 (address Lees?t Georges Rd), son of JBJ & Sarah

Jno B Jones address 12 Redfern Street year Dec 1839
Jno B Jones address 44 Miller Street year 1844
Jno Brattan Jones address 44 Miller Street year 1848
Manchester Rate Books 1706-1900

EDIT to add

Did you see this burial of Joseph Bratton & Susannah Jones son Charles

6 May 1876 at Manchester Cheetham Hill Wesleyan Cemetery
Charles F Bratton Jones age 20, grave no 4295, inquest
Owner Joseph Bratton Jones, address  500 Rochdale Rd

Charles was killed by being run over on May Day by a lorry........a verdict of Accidental Death but censured Henshaw on the ground that he had acted carelessly.
