Shaun,
Does it say what William Ellison's occupation was on his discharge in 1874.  He was a Musician in 1871 census.

His Artillery rank is stated as "Driver". There is no mention of his musician activities but then there isn't much about him in the surviving papers.

There are some records for him at National Archives.

I think this may be him with an earlier army number: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C12159048

The Ancestry link I posted was to the army birth record attached to your tree,  to illustrate that it doesn't say where he was born, just when he was born and where/when he was baptised. It's possible that he was born in Manchester and baptised a month later in Enniskillen.

Shaun,
Thanks so much for all of that information.   Think it would be pretty clear now that William Ellison was born in Manchester.   We did have information previously that Lawrence Ellison was in Manchester in 1830, then went to Ireland.

Am wondering if you have access to any records for his sister Maria Ellison who was born in 1836, baptised 12.8.1836 at Portsmouth, Hampshire.    It would seem that his wife Judith Ellison was able to travel around with her Husband for some periods of time.   Records do show Lawrence in the 59th Regiment at Portsmouth on 25.4.1836.   Cannot imagine that Judith could have travelled around too much after the birth of their children.
Jan

So many blanks on what happened to Lawrence's family after his death in 1845 at Portsmouth.

I'm not finding anything for Maria. Perhaps she died in infancy?

Shaun,

I have found information now, re William Ellison.  The first Indenture to bear the seal of the new Manchester Union was one, William Ellison on 30.10.1844 aged 13, who went to Joseph Hibbert on St. George Street (later named Rochdale Road).  For some reason he was then re-indentured in 1849 to John Lomas at 76 Oldham Road, Manchester.   John Lomas was a Clog & Patten Maker.

So much coming together now.   Has been a long journey finding what happened to members of this Ellison family.

Best regards Jan

I've seen the army "birth" record but it certifies only the place of baptism, not the place of birth

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/mediaui-viewer/tree/746468/person/420077514208/media/3849e5c5-4f7f-46eb-abc4-beabeffd9a1a?_phsrc=VFV5853&_phstart=successSource

Not much of his army file has survived so we don't know the dates of his service in India. His occupation prior to joining the army was "clog & patten maker".

I can see John Lomas in the 1851 census at 80 Oldham Road but no sign of William.

So where William was living, unknown, maybe he was still living at the Workhouse, would that be possible?
