Leckie & Lees of Kippen late 1700s
« on: Sunday 05 December 21 06:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I've been tracing my grandmothers family, her maiden name was Leckie.
I have traced them back to my 4x great grandfather James Leckie who was born in Kippen Stirlingshire in 1826 and was the 9th of 11 children born to Alexander Leckie and Margaret Lees, the first born in 1812 and the last in 1831 all in Kippen.

I can't seem to find any record of Alexander or Margarets bith, death or marriage anywhere in Scotland other than finding Margaret living in Argyle st Glasgow with 6 of the children in 1841 census but no mention of her husband Alexander, i assume he must have died after the birth of their last child in 1831 and before the 1841 census.

Hoping someone may be researching the same family and may be able to help.

Kippen is only a couple of miles from Leckie Castle and estate where the surname "Leckie" originated in the 1300s.

Thank you all

There was an Alexander Leckie born in Kippen that would have been about 34 for first pregnancy...

If you search freecen for 1841 and type in leckie under surname  , margaret under first name and 1777 as date of birth...

https://freecen1.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

It comes up with

I can't seem to find the census you mentioned for Margaret Leckie living alone with the kids in Glasgow ... are you quite sure its her by the childrens names?

Thanks for the info regarding Alexander and his parents thats great.
They didn't have children named William or Janet so unfortunately the census showing Alexander most likely isn't the right family.
I will try to upload the 1841 and 1871 census showing Margaret and some of the children,
When i click on the children their census record shows them all born in Kippen matching the Scotlands People records i have.

The name Leckie stirs fear and anxiety in my heart  :-[

Do you think your clan are related to the dreaded exam revision guides by Leckie and Leckie  ;D

From the minutes of Kippen kirk session, 19th January 1812:

Compeared Alexander Leckie & Margaret Lees ac
knowledging the guilt of antinuptial fornication
The Session after considering the Case determine
that they shall be rebuked before the Session
and that there shall be intimation of this
made at the Baptism of their child. They
were accordingly rebuked and absolved.

[spelling as in session minutes]

In the margin, the clerk has written "Alexr Leckie & Margt Lees Irreg. Marriage". However, this is  an error as the case is one of antenuptial fornication. The previous case and the following case are both for irregular marriages, so the clerk has just written the same thing three times by mistake.

I can't seem to find the census you mentioned for Margaret Leckie living alone with the kids in Glasgow ... are you quite sure its her by the childrens names?

In 1851, in Kippen (on FreeCEN):

David Leckie, 34, tile maker, b. Kippen,
Janet Leckie, wife, 31,
Alexander Leckie, 8,
John Leckie, 6,
Janet Leckie, 4,
Daniel Leckie, 2,
a son, 1 month,
Margaret Leckie, mother, widow, 73, b. Perthshire, "Port"

This Margaret seems to fit with the one in the 1841 census. Do you have a David, born about 1817?

Wow ! The minutes of the Kippen Kirk Session is a great find thank you so much.
It more or less confirms my thoughts and the 1841 census that Margaret was born around 1796ish and was probably under age.

I had downloaded a few death certificates from Scotlands People searching for Margarets death,
I went back over them looking for the Margaret with a son named David in Kippen and found her.
She died in Kippen in 1860 age 83 and her son David was the informant on the Death Certificate but it also shows her fathers name was James Campell and mothers maiden name Mcarthur.
So unfortunately not our Margaret Lees.
