Diana, am I missing something here? Was Samuel James only 17 when he married Matilda in 1856, as by the 1871 census he is recorded as aged 56 = c1815 but should be around 33

Added, is it possible that it was Samuel James c1816 married Matilda in 1856, and that the marriage in 1865 is the son of John c 1808 who could well be a brother of Samuel James c1816

It looks like I need more info on both marriages.   It will have to wait until I'm next able to go to Nottingham and look everything up for myself...
