Curragh Camp Records
« on: Thursday 09 December 21 13:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi
My GG Grandfather's address is the Curragh camp on his marriage registration in 1906.  This tells me he was linked to the English army.  I cannot find any other details about this and without an army number I cannot request records. I know that on the 1911 census he is listed as a labourer which also tells me he left the army.  I'm stuck from there as I would like to trace back.  Can anyone help with the curragh side of things or advise on how to find army records his name was Joseph Henry Mead(e), born circa 1881.

@Heywood

They are the right details.  Thanks for your reply.  I have this information but I don't know how to track back further from the Curragh Camp.  I also believe that he left the army not long after that as his census records show him as a labourer.

If you know how I can search his army records or try to narrow the search, I'd love to hear from you again.

Thanks  :)

thanks for your reply.  These are showing Irish soldiers.  I think my GG grandfather would have been in the English army.  His marriage record shows his parents live in Uxbridge or Middlesex.

His marriage took place in 1906 in kildare and he was a soldier then.  By 1911 he was a labourer but living in Kildare still.

Would love some suggestions on how to track back army records without a number.

Thanks a mil  :)

According to the 1911 census image, Joseph was born in England. Do you know where he was born?
This will help narrow down his military record, if it still exists. Find My Past have many pre-WW1 military service records.

Also, his occupation on daughter Mary Elizabeth's 29 July 1906 birth record is "labourer". When he married on 13 June 1906, he was a soldier. So it suggests he left the (regular) army before his daughter was born about 6 weeks after the marriage.

UPDATE: I've found a record for a Joseph Mead, born 1881 in Bushey, Berkshire. Record indicates born near the town of Rickmansworth. Father's name: Daniel Mead. JM served initially with the Royal Fusiliers, then the 13th & 19th Hussars.

His military record indicates he attested in 1899 and was transferred to Army Reserve on 25 July 1906. Could be a coincidence, but that date is a few days before the birth of Mary Elizabeth. His 5-page record is on Fold3 which I have access to.

@Hillhurst

Thanks for replying.

I know he changed to be a labourer, as far as I know he was a groomsman after he left the army.  I believe that it was the army that brought him to Ireland.  From what I can see his parents were listed on the marriage registration as living in Uxbridge, Middlesex.  From research that I have done he may be from Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.

I don't really know England so not sure if these are near each other.  I think they all come under the scope of greater London now.

Anyway, I hope this helps - could really do with a push in the right direction.

Thanks  :)

In that case, it sounds like the military record I found is possibly your man. I'll PM you.

They were Irish regiments in the British Army.
 There hasn't been an English army for more than 300 years. Your ancestor was in the British Army which included Irishmen.
