If anyone has full access to the British Newspaper Archive, by putting in the search-box Kirby Lane Farm, there are references which include the name A J LILLEY regarding it.

Sue  ....    this from "Kenilworth Advertiser" - 29 July 1911  >

Seems to be the Prize List from the Monks Kirby Farmers Club - (spread over a couple of columns.)

Produce etc.

--  Butter - 2lbs - to be made up plain.

4th place :   A. J.  LILLEY, Kirby Lane Farm, Monks Kirby.

Sorry to hear the news Tikva, thoughts are with you.

Don't worry about the thread, it will still be here when you return, you will be in a better frame of mind to deal with it then.

Cheers

Nothing new to add - but thinking about other immigrants “I have known  ;D“ do you think the scenario could be something like

Albert comes to NZ, leaving behind a fiancée (Lotty) promising to come back once he is established to marry her.
He duly goes back. They marry. She decides she doesn’t want to come to NZ. He stays a couple of years trying to persuade her. She resists.
He gives up and returns.

Yep, had thought along those lines too, mckha.     ;D

Albert appears to have reclaimed (returned to) that same land at Warea (whatever he was up to, in the intervening years, there seems to have perhaps been intent, to return to NZ).

Like your thinking mckha.  Think we all have one of those in family.  Oh only to have been a fly on the wall back then. :)

If he was away, for it seems likely at least 5 years, are there records of who might have leased the land?

Perhaps the neighbouring farmer might have leased or looked after it.
