who was our mother

 william Bates born   abt 1864 and Ellen Bates abt 1865 Manchester Lancashire Father William Bates B abt 1818 Lancashire. In the 1851 census he is at 52 Stock port Rd medlock Manchester Unmarried aged 41  occupation surgeon He was born Clayton Lee Moors Lancashire. In 1868 he marries Bertha Mary HILL. He died 1874 Manchester( 1869 they had a son John Edwin Bates). Ellen Bates married Arthur Hailstone. 1881 census she is with Mary B Bates as step daughter.So my query is WHO was Ellen and Williams real mother( without having to buy a birth cert) and were William and she married and where. Have tried all sorts of avenues Thanks lnr

So the mother's maiden name was Bucknall.

Their marriage:

William Bates & Ellen Backnall 30th April 1862 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire.

Here's Ellen's death announcement:

Feb 26th (1865), at 6 Stockport-road, Manchester, after giving birth to a daughter, aged 34, Ellen, wife of William Bates, Esq., M.D., and second daughter of Mr. Bucknall, of Kidderminster.
