Louisa MEAD aka MEADES emigration to South Australia c 1865
« on: Saturday 18 December 21 02:58 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the emigration details for a Louisa MEAD aka MEADES who arrived c 1865 in South Australia (info from Ancestry Family Tree).

Louisa MEAD[es] was born 29 September 1848 in Cowes, Hampshire, England to Thomas MEADES and Louisa COLLINS.  The 1861 census for Portsea, Hampshire lists her as 12 years of age.

Louisa married Henry GREEN on 1 February 1870 in Adelaide, South Australia.  Henry died on 10 March 1872.  On 31 January 1874 she remarried to James Jennings, North Adelaide.  James died in 1922 in Adelaide and Louisa died on 11 June 1928 in Adelaide.

Louisa Mead[es] would have been about 17 years of age when she emigrated to South Australia.  Did she travel on her own?

I am not seeking any other information currently on the family.

I have checked FindmyPast, Ancestry including Family Trees (most accounts have not been accessed for 3-11mths) and FamilySearch but so far have been unable to find Louisa's arrival details to South Australia.

Any assistance appreciated.

The earliest evidence you have of Louisa MEADS being in Australia is her marriage, 1 Feb 1870, Adelaide, details on the marriage certificate will be useful.

What names do you see for witnesses?.

Why do you think that Louisa was aged about 17 when she emigrated to South Australia?.

South Australian passenger lists are free to search at https://archives.sa.gov.au, though there are gaps. In 1865 there were 14 ships arrived - the passenger lists are available if you want to look through each one.

I wondering … how sure are you regarding Louisa’s mother and Louisa’s birth details?

In Jan 1859 a family called “MEDD” arrives in South Australia on the “Clara”, but their surname is transcribed as “MEAD”.

The members of this family are:

Thomas MEDD b abt 1820 London, d 9 Mar 1874 Adelaide SA (bur West Terrace Cemetery), occ: tailor (1851, 1858, 1868)
marriage reg Q#4 1842 district St George Hanover Square
Tracey/Theresa HACKEL b abt 1820 Barnett Middlesex, d april 1875 (bur West Terrace Cemetery)

Children:
  • Arthur MEDD birth reg Q#1 1844 district St James Westminster, occ: painter (1865) X1867 Adelaide to Julia SCOTT
  • Charlotte MEDD birth reg Q#1 1847 St James Westminster, death 20 Feb 1908 Adelaide (probable partners: X#1?? abt mid 1860’s to Philip John/Henry GREEN and X#2 1901 to John DONOHOE. NB I don't know whether this is the same Phil(l)ip, but in 1879 a 40y schoemaker called Phillip Green deserted his wife in Adelaide)
  • Louisa MEDD/MEAD(?) birth reg Q#4 1849 Lambeth  (NB Louisa MEAD is “nee MEDD” in 1887 when daughter Sarah JENNINGS  is born)
  • Tracey Rebecca MEDD birth reg Q#2 1855 St Luke, Middlesex, death 10 Feb 1859 Aldinga, Wil SA

FYI: The family is mentioned quite a bit in TROVE.

I think that we both suspect that the Louisa Mead from Cowes is not the same person as the Louisa Mead in South Australia?

Many thanks Wivenhoe, Maddys52, Treespirit and Ladyhawk for your postings and information.
After reviewing the above I agree that it appears that the Louisa Mead from Cowes is not the same person as the Louisa Mead in South Australia!
The surname Meades/Meade/Mead makes it hard researching, not to mention the same first name running through several generations.  I have already gone down a couple of "rabbit holes" before finding clarifying information.
Thanks again for all your assistance which is very much appreciated.
Merry Christmas and keep safe.

Archives South Australia

https://archives.sa.gov.au/sites/default/files/documentstore/passengerlists/1859/GRG35_48_1_59-1_Clara.pdf

Parents and daughters are on page 4 of 8    Remittance and nominee passengers
Son Arthur is on page 7 of 8                       Remittance and nominee passengers

I think that means that someone in the colony has paid part of their fares......acts as guarantee.

This will be the correct passenger list and last name spelling will be Medd.
