Birth registered twice on Lancashire BMD
« on: Wednesday 22 December 21 17:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, I'm researching the Flynn family from the Canal Street area of Preston and use Lancashire BMD a bit as it gives some good info.

Some births however appear to be registered twice with a different mother's maiden name each time.

I've been looking at the Farrell family:
Martin Farrell born Preston 1859
Thomas Farrell born Preston 1862
John Farrell born Preston 1863
Mary Farrell born Preston 1866

All four birth appear with the mother's maiden name of Gaughan (or similar spellings) and Flynn/Flinn

In 1858 there is a marriage of John Farrell and Mary Gaughan in Preston but no marriage between a Farrell and a Flynn/Flinn in this period.

John and Mary Farrell appear in Preston on the 1861 & 71 censuses with their children (John Farrell junior dies) in 1868. But I'm struggling to find them in 1881.

Does anyone know a possible reason why a birth is recorded twice?

Thanks

Lee

Woman/mother  wed as a widow,
Was raised by a stepfather and used both surnames
Born illegitimate,  and used both her mothers maiden and married names

LancashireBMD entry is not showing two registrations the reference number is the same - GRO index just shows mothers maiden surname Flynn.  Pauline has explained the probable reason

ADDED Do you have the marriage certificate for John Farrell and Mary  :-\

Is this a possibility, you do not give us any idea when John & Mary were born

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1848

FLYNN   Mary
GAUGHAN   Henry
1848   Preston Register Office or Registrar Attended
Preston   PRESTON/9/196

FARRELL   Martin   FLYNN   1859   Preston   Preston   PRES/112/81
FARRELL   Martin   GAUGHAN   1859   Preston   Preston   PRES/112/81

usually this means that the Mother has been married before

So one will be her maiden name and one will be her name from her previous marriage

Thank you so much for this, I've seen it previously but never been able to place it in the Flynn family tree but the dates match the period I'm looking at.

Henry Gaughan dies in 1856 and no births for him and Mary Flynn are recorded. This matches Mary Gaughan marrying John Farrell in 1858, she is listed as being around 5 years older than John on the census.

Sorry, another rookie question. Is it possible to view a full marriage certificate online without paying £10 to Lancashire BMD?

If the Mary FLYNN who marries Henry GAUGHAN in 1848 is my 1st cousin 4x removed then her father will be listed as Andrew Flynn - Labourer.

In 1851 he's living at 49 Hope Street Preston so this may be Mary Flynn's address also.

Don't confuse an entry being indexed twice, with being registered twice.......not the same thing.
