Meaning of "Base" on Baptismal Record

I'm trying to find out what the notation of "Base" on a baptismal record from 1801 in All Saint's, Wigan, Lancashire means.  Here is the transcription of the record:

Thomas Farrimond - second Son of Henry Farrimond & Ann (formerly Atherton)

    Occupation: Weaver

Ann Farrimond was the illegitimate daughter of Margaret Atherton.

Looks like Base to me, just with the old form s (Bafe)

Baseborn is a common remark in old parish records, as well as "natural son/dau"- as Neale said, meaning illegitimate. This is backed up by Ann being the daughter of her mother (Margaret) on the record rather than daughter of her father.

The marriage is a bit confusing there are two marriage records for Henry and Ann one in 1798 and one in 1800.

The marriage was in 1800. The earlier record is the announcement of the banns.

There may have been more than 1 woman named Margaret Atherton who had illegitimate children baptised at All Saints.
