Hi CanKan,
Before shelling out for a sub, why not take a look at the Google News Archive, Wikipedia's list of online newspaper archives - and what your public library might have on offer? Having said that, the best paid-for resource is the British Newspaper Archive...but even that has free access options, as explained below.

Libraries that I know don't insist on a local connection, and which you can join online, are: Lancashire, Essex, and Brighton.

The BNA offers 3 free views when you register with them (no card details requested). Some libraries and archives in the UK offer free unlimited access to the BNA - but you have to visit the library/archive; you can't use it from home. Do any libraries/archives where you live provide access to the BNA?
* Before taking out a sub for either, you could use the BNA's free search tool to check if it holds anything featuring your ancestors. If it does, a sub will enable you to view what you've found. Please also note that Find My Past's search tool for newspapers is inferior to that of the BNA; so if you decide to go for the Find My Past sub (or already have one), it's easier to search the BNA then find the required pieces on Find My Past. [Please see BNA link below this ad.]
