Unknown Landowner
« on: Sunday 26 December 21 19:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello  I'm trying to find who owned a piece of land in the pre 1900 or early 1900.
Town: Shipston-on-stour
Address:  London Road (west) known earlier as Oxford Road separated by a lane to Furze Hill Nurseries, shown on old maps of Shipston
The land was rented to Edwin Barnes in 1924 and his rent was paid to Oddfellows Society in Shipston.
I can't find any named members of this group.
Pre 1900 Possible owner John Henry Clark who owned land in Shipston and perhaps along the London Road
Any help would be much appreciated

Have you a reason for thinking the land was NOT owned by the Oddfellows in 1900?  Quite usual for land to be owned by a Friendly Society such as the Oddfellows.  Sometimes land was used for their rooms or rented out.  Some time Friendly Societies, in NZ at least, owned relatively large areas of land in towns and cities that they leased out.

Here is a link to a Manchester Unity calendar Shipston 1900

If you can track down the Manchester Unity/Oddfellows main branch in the County they will have records of the local branches and including if they are still active. Many have kept their records and you may find who owned/leased the land in the period you are interested in.

Thanks Shanreagh for your reply. I was unsure about who the Oddfellows bought the land from as I really don't know much about this at all.  Would the Tithe Apportionment have been given to them or did they buy land with the money from the society?
Thanks for the link, it should help a lot.
