Tracing an adopted sibling
« on: Monday 27 December 21 09:41 GMT (UK) »
Good morning

I would like to trace my adopted brother. Unfortunately, I do not know his adopted name. I do have birth details and some very limited information about his adoption:

Mother's Details: Marion Elizabeth Foyle, DOB 1 March 1952, now deceased.
Adoption details: kept with Mother for 6 months before adopted, we think through the Catholic Church.

I have found him on the birth index here:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/8782/images/ons_b19682az-0486?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=e2bf63e0683898fdee58ae12151ae60b&usePUB=true&_phsrc=wKo435&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_gl=1*1y6pgvv*_ga*MTEyOTcyNjg0Ny4xNjM2MjExMjY0*_ga_4PXYE4RLH1*MTY0MDU5NjgxNy44LjEuMTY0MDU5Njg0NS4w&pId=90182906

I can see that the entry has been annotated which I assume is to show the record is superseded due to adoption. I cannot read the annotation - looks like it might say 4907/S or 4H09/S.

After looking through the guides and threads on here I have contacted my Local Authority (Surrey CC) to see if they can provide any support. I have also completed the form to go on the Contact Register and done a general google search to see if he has come up on any general sites for people looking for birth relatives (nil return).

Am I correct in thinking that there is nothing else i can do in terms of searching other than going to an intermediary agency, given I do not know his adopted name?  Does the annotation on the birth index mean anything i.e. would that link me to an entry anywhere that would disclose any details?

Many thanks in advance for any advice/help.

Lindy

I am no expert when it comes to adoption, but I do know there will be nothing in the public domain to link original birth  details to subsequent adoption details.

I think you have probably done as much as you can, especially as you have added your details to the Contact Register. I don’t know if anyone else can offer further advice. Good  luck anyway.

Hi
www.freebmd.org.uk have two entries for 7C 4907/S  AMJ 1968, one in Salisbury (your interest) and one in Bridgwater.
I wonder if they are connected, I m not sure what this may mean, they may or may not be connected or entries correct , perhaps some other Rootschatter might have an idea.
Rootschat has a policy not to name living people in posts so please be careful.
Cathy :)
Added.... having doubts that they are connected now, don t want to get your hopes up too much.

I doubt that they are any more connected than all the other entries on the GRO index that share the same page reference.   :).  Adoption records are not available without going through the channels which OP has already approached.

If it helps I did use a intermediary it might be worth asking with the information you have already.
I found it useful because they leased with the sibling I never new about.
I remember they said be careful they might not want you in there life and they might not the sort of person you want in your life.
Good luck but be aware it doesn't always end up like Long Lost Families.
