Please Date Photo - Benson, Australia
« on: Wednesday 29 December 21 11:04 GMT (UK) »
Would it be possible to date this photo of Robert Benson in Australia, please? I have an idea myself, but would like some other opinions too. The photo is endorsed "Robert Benson, wife and daughter", however, I don't know whether this is the original caption, or somebody's guess? The following may assist;

Robert Benson b.1877 and d.1943. He married wife Barbara Graser b.1886. They married 1910 and had a daughter that same year.

Apparently his wife left the country without Robert and didn't return. There is no other record of a second marriage, or another child for Robert.

Thanks

Could they be his daughter and granddaughter?

Not a pram or pushchair in sight.  Not a nappy bag either.  Little girl must have been toilet trained.  Is that a soft rag doll over the woman's left arm?

Is this photo taken by a 'street photographer' strolling through an open-air pedestrian area eg at say Sydney Royal Easter Show...

I think that if she is wearing nylon stockings, it will likely be WWII or later.

She (adult female) is wearing socks. ::)

Modified to confirm I am referring to the adult female wearing ankle high socks.

I agree with Carol - and probably the first half of the 1930s. I've a photo of a child that looks very similar and is dated 1932.

Thanks to ALL for your replies.

I too was thinking around 1930's (mid?), which would rule out the little girl being his daughter b.1910. I never thought of the possibility of the older lady being that "1910" daughter and the little girl being Robert's granddaughter from the "1910" daughter?

I'm unable to find a marriage for the "1910" daughter, and unfortunately birth records after 1921 cannot be accessed for the "granddaughter" (100 year rule on birth records in my Australian state).

Anyway, thanks again, and will see if I can come up with something else.........?
