Boland Family in Newfoundland
« on: Wednesday 29 December 21 12:24 GMT (UK) »
Hey all

I'm currently trying to do my family tree for our Boland clan. I use Ancestry.com but I've hit a few walls & I don't have much to go on but what I do know is this:

My grandfather was born in Bonavista, Newfoundland (he married my Glaswegein grandmother in the 40s.
He was in the Canadian Navy
I have found records for 1 of his brothers
Also death certificates for some of their children and their boat passenger records as both my grandparents moved back to Newfoundland during my grandads tour for the 2nd World War.
They moved back to Glasgow after the death of 1 of their children.
I know my grandads parents name & have found my paternal grandmothers grave online & his parents marriage certificates
I also know his grandparents or possibly great grandparents moved from Ireland during the potato famine but the time frame on that is not definite.

I have details my grandad was born in the Fair Islands but there are family in St John's as they would return there for holidays in the 80s/90s and stay with family there.

My grandad had 1 sister Greta & 4 brothers who as far as I know lived & died in various parts of Newfoundland

I would love to make contact with my long distance family and also complete this for my family but mostly my dad as he had 6 brothers & 1 sister who died in infancy half of which died in Newfoundland.

I can supply more details ie: the tree I have so far

I'm completely stuck and I've searched everywhere for more details so any guidance would be greatly appreciated

"My grandad had 1 sister Greta & 4 brothers who as far as I know lived & died in various parts of Newfoundland"
-----------
Out of curiosity, is this the family on the 1935 Census? I've left out the names of the two youngest sons, since they could be alive. If you know that they are not alive, then feel free to post their names.

Newfoundland's 1935 Provincial Census
District of Bonavista

"I would love to make contact with my long distance family"

To do that, you are looking for living people, which is pretty limited on rootschat, and then usually by private message. Make two more posts to qualify for PM.

In general, I would bring the tree down as far as I could to the present time, and then look in telephone books and directories for the surnames. For example, using canada411.ca to look for Bolands in Bonavista found 215 results. Maybe you can narrow it down if you have the first names of living people in your tree.

 https://www.canada411.ca/search/?stype=si&what=boland&where=Bonavista%2C+NL

There might also be references to them in newspapers, but I don't have access to any newspaper sites, and don't know which are best for Newfoundland anyway.

----------
If you want help working backward, post what you know about your grandparents, assuming they have died, and people will see what they can do.

---------
If you get no replies in a day or so on this board, then try on the Canada board, but include a link to the .url of this post when you do, if you can. That is so people don't duplicate what has already been posted.

I took another look at this, and it looks like the search returned all the Bolands in NL. Maybe I am missing something, and maybe there is a way to narrow it down to Fair Island.

a site search might get you some interesting results, depending on how much you know about your family:
type or copy this exactly into google. (no space after site, then a space and the search words)

If that is your family in my reply #2, then the obit of John Rufus Boland (1931-2017) will name some living relatives. You'd then need to put their names into a phone book and see what comes up.
His obit, along with a picture of him:
https://www.cauls.ca/obituary/4215392

It says he was predeceased by parents David and Lydia (Hunt) of Fair Island, sister, Greta, brothers; James, Lud and George.

edited to add, his wife died 2 months later.

Hi!

Thankyou for your replies

The details you have put are exactly the ones I have.

I have the documents that Ancestry.com allow you to have such as the 1935 census but the information is very limited to my great uncles & aunt

I will try the phone book suggestion also that seems like a good starting point. I'm hoping I can make contact with other family members who can fill me in, in regards to how life went for my uncles & aunt & further back.

I do have my uncles death certificate (he died aged 3) and was buried in St John's at least thats what the Vital Statistics Index tells me so I think it safe to say most members moved there as the boy died in my great grandmothers house.

I'll keep searching & try all the suggestions hopefully I will uncover some more.

Thankyou again

Hello Lisabee and a very warm welcome to RootsChat  :)

It is possible to put just St John's in the directory link posted by oldohiohome and find some listings there as well (you mentioned visits to rellies there also). I would just put the last name in the who box. Full contact info is generally provided.

The chebucto link also has a 1945 census that you can explore.

Eleanor Boland b march 6th 1811 St Johns , Newfoundland - married James Keilley 1836 - they had a large family - this tree owner is a Keilley and a descendant of who looks to be the first in StJohns
Edmund Bolin - not Boland

Hi Lisabee and welcome to Rootschat...My Father was born in St. John's and came to the UK with the Royal Navy, met my Mother and married and never went back. When I started my Family History, I rang canada411 and found cousins, and arranged to meet, we made two visits to St, John's.
I found these sites very useful in my search:

Andrew Boland, Son of Francis mentioned here:

My Father is mentioned on the previous page  :)
