Ideas for approximate age of photo and woman
« on: Friday 31 December 21 15:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello I looking for some help in dating  this  photograph and also would love opinions on the likely age of the woman.
On the back of the photo is a postcard type  back with printed sections  - 'This side for communication' and 'The address to be written here' also a  box to indicate where the stamp should be placed. The name of the photographer is written and it says
Photo by Fred Shaw 13 College Street Rotherham
Thanks for looking

.The photographer is listed as a Fred Shaw, of 13 College Street, Rotherham. The Kelly's directories show that he was at this address from 1908 - 1929,

Thankyou japeflakes-  the information from Kelly's does help.

The photo to me looks full of contradictions - I've looked at fashion photos of that time but they all seem to be of people just off to party and not dressed like this- I find her outfit difficult to put an age on.
The bench looks more like the 1920's but I'm guessing on that.
Also the person I've always thought this is died when she was in her mid 30's  and I wonder if this woman looks older.

Typical dress of the war years, maybe a bit before or after but not by much.
She looks 35-40.
Can we see the back?

Here is the back of the photocard.  The sellotape marks are from where it had been stuck into a frame or album - some time ago.

The date for that stamp box is unknown, but I would agree with Jim's suggestion.

It's a Crown Studios stamp box used 1913-29.
So looks like WW1.

Ah, you've found it, I must have missed that one, was it on the Playle's  website?
Scrap that, I just found it under "C"...it gives "Unknown on another page but that was listed as "Fancy Dress Studio  ::)

Thankyou both for the extra input today - I think you have narrowed it down really accurately so I now know am pretty sure it is a WW1 photograph.  I know her husband signed up right at the beginning of the war. Also as they were not a family with lot of money a studio photo would have been a rare event and that timeframe would give it a real purpose.

She was born in 1884 so only 30 at beginning of the war. I think she looks older but  possibly didn't feel too relaxed about the studio setting

Id never heard of Plyle's website so I learnt something as well.
Thanks again
