Grice/Williams
« on: Sunday 02 January 22 20:19 GMT (UK) »
I have in my possession a Book of Common Prayer dated 1731. The inscription says - This Bible was given by Msr Nichs Grice aged 3 years July 3rd 1730 to his Nurse Anne Williams on January 1st 1734.
I have since researched the following- Father Nicolas, Mother Margaret, resident Brook St, Parish of St George, Mayfair London.
Msr Grice was baptised at Upton, Northants., and the Bible was found during a house clearance in Northampton. Any information on either the Grice or Williams families appreciated.

Not exactly sure what information you are after. Are you looking for living relatives of Nicholas or the Nurse or just general information on their families?

I did find this tho unsure if it is of any help but interesting all the same  :)
I have cut some information in 2 pieces and posted it as one attachment [so you had the headings of the columns] from the below link which gives the house number and who owned the house Grice was leasing.

When you google the address quiet a impressive building.

Hi JohnsonReynolds1955

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

I think Nicholas Grice Jnr died in 1755. He left a will and left everything to his mother Margaret. Margaret by now had remarried to a Col. Colleton, of the First Regiment of Foot Guards

He was returning from Lisbon when he died. He died without issue and it was noted in a newspaper report, 'Family is become extinct'.

His last wish was to be buried by his father at Iver, Parish of Buckinghamshire.

You can download his Will from https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D543628 It is currently free to download due to ongoing covid restrictions at TNA. You only need to register and sign in to do so.

If you have access to historical newspapers, there is mention here of his death in:

Derby Mercury - Friday 9 May 1755
Leeds Intelligencer - Tuesday 13 May 1755

A couple of other Wills you might want to have a look at also on TNA. Both for a Nicholas Grice:

1701 - https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D666603
1749 - https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D690877

I haven't looked at these two but at a guess, father and grandfather?

The Gentleman's Magazine in 1749 refers to the death of Nicholas Grice, Gentleman of Iver, Buckinghamshire. Would connect to the ref to a will for that year www.rootschat.com/links/01r61/

For Monica.
Thank you for all the wonderful details. It’s certainly given me food for thought.
My aim eventually is to return the bible to its rightful owner or rather their descendants. Apparently the book was found in Buckinghamshire not Northamptonshire as previously stated so the history certainly fits. I shall continue my quest!!
